DECATUR FIRE – Fire gutted an unoccupied house in the 600 block of West Mill Street in Decatur early Sunday morning. Firefighters from Decatur, Bridgeport and Rhome battled the blaze that was reported at 1:37 a.m. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 5:30 a.m. Decatur Fire Marshal Deroy Bennett said Sunday afternoon that he is still investigating the cause of the fire. “The house was not occupied, but had all utilities,” he said. Bennett added that the neighbor church, the Primera Iglesia Bautista, recently purchased the property for future expansion.

NEWARK FIRE – Newark, Rhome and Boyd firefighters extinguished a fire early Monday morning that gutted a house in the 300 block of County Road 4856 in Newark. Emergency officials believed the home was vacant. Firefighters responded at 12:40 a.m. with the Newark and Rhome departments being the first toned out. Boyd was soon called upon to provide mutual aid. Newark Fire Chief James Edgemon said the old house with brush grown up around it was fully engulfed when he and the first responding unit arrived. “When we got here, you could see straight through it,” the chief said. “The trees in the back were burning from the heat of the house.” Edgemon said the blaze could be seen from Rhome. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

EARLY VOTING CONTINUES – You’ve got another week to vote early in the March 2 primary elections. On Saturday at Walmart in Decatur, 239 people voted in the Republican primary and  31 in the Democratic primary. Early voting continues 8 a.m.-5 p.m. today through Friday at the Decatur Civic Center.

MORE SNOW? – It’s possible. The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance snow to begin early tomorrow morning. Light accumulations are possible. Wise County rainfall totals from this weekend included 0.7 of an inch in Chico, 0.55 in Alvord, 0.4 in Bridgeport and 0.38 in Decatur.

BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS – The Slidell Lady Greyhounds won their Class A Division II Region III area title game Friday 57-24 over the Blum Lady Bobcats in Aledo. Slidell outscored Blum 16-2 in the second quarter to take control of the game.

CLOSING ARGUMENTS – Closing arguments are expected to be made today by the four sides involved in the civil case brought by the family of Jackie Murphree. The case is being heard in 271st District Court.

RELAY MEETING – The Relay for Life Committee will meet at 5:30 today in the Wise County Messenger conference room.

DINNER AND SHOW – The Paradise High School one-act play parents, cast and crew host a spaghetti dinner and talent show tonight at the PHS cafeteria.  Dinner is at 6, and the talent portion of the evening is at 7. Tickets are available at the door for $7.

DECATUR CHAMBER LUNCH – The Decatur Chamber of Commerce Luncheon is 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Decatur Civic Center. Cost is $12 per person, and reservations are due by noon today. Guest speaker is State Rep. Phil King. Call (940) 627-3107 for reservations.

EDUCATORS MEETING – Wise County Retired School Personnel meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Catfish O’Harlies in Decatur. Sheriff David Walker will be the speaker.

GROUNDWATER MEETING – The board of directors for the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District meet at 6 tonight at the district office, 1250 E. Texas 199 in Springtown.

LAST CALL FOR LETTERS – Today is the last day to submit a letter to the editor regarding candidates in the March 2 primary election. Letters should be 250 words or less and can be e-mailed to news@wcmessenger.com by 5 p.m.

FUNERAL for Dorothy Hankins, 49, of Bridgeport is 2 p.m. today at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport with burial at West Bridgeport Cemetery.
