DISD NAMES SUPT. FINALIST – Rod Townsend, the superintendent at Hico, was named the lone finalist for Decatur superintendent at last night’s school board meeting. Decatur board president Alan White said Townsend is “an experienced superintendent” and described him as a “uniter” and “go-getter.” Under Texas law, the school board must wait 21 days before making the hiring official.

ALVORD EDC APPOINTMENTS – The Alvord City Council approved Mayor Terri Freeman’s appointments to the Economic Development Corporation Board at Thursday’s meeting, with Debra McKelvain, Callie Manning, Charlotte Fitzgerald, Tracy McKinney Michelle Hardee and Paula Talley chosen to serve terms on the board.

EDC LOOKS AT FINALISTS – The Decatur Economic Development Corp. will interview three finalists this afternoon for the vacant director’s job. A decision could be made following the interviews. Marty Harrison resigned in April.

BOYD TO MEET – The Boyd School Board meets at 6 tonight at the administration office and is expected to name its lone finalist for the superintendent’s job.

STORMS – Strong thunderstorms popped up yesterday afternoon. Rainfall totals included 0.42 of an inch in Decatur and 0.8 in Chico. Wind gusts were reported around 60 miles per hour. Damage reports included a tree that fell onto the roof of a home near Decatur and some damage at the Decatur airport.

BAKE SALE – Help send the Boyd varsity 7 on 7 football team to the state tournament in College Station July 8-9 by supporting a bake sale Saturday, 4-8 p.m. at the Boyd Community Center during the antique auto show.

TRADE DAYS – The Decatur Trade Days is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Sheriff’s Posse Grounds in Decatur.  For information call Carla Tackett at (940) 390-9104.

CAR SHOW – A car show is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Boyd Community Center. Proceeds benefit Boyd parks and South Wise Services food pantry at Trinity Baptist Church.

LEAGUE – A women’s adult volleyball league begins Wednesday, June 30, in Bridgeport. Play will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays through July 28. Cost is $200 per team. For information call Peggy Barton at (940) 626-9046 or e-mail pbarton@embarqmail.com.

SOCCER CAMP – The Lady Eagles will hold a soccer camp for all incoming freshmen through seniors June 28-30 at Decatur High School. For information call Kat Eoff at (940) 627-3430.

FIRECRACKER SCRAMBLE – The Runaway Bay Ladies Golf Association Firecracker Scramble is Saturday, July 3, to benefit the Runaway Bay Volunteer Fire Department. The format is a four-person scramble team. Cost is $50 per person and includes entry fee, green and cart fee. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9. FUNERALS – Memorial service for Teri Williams Aguilar, 16, of Newark is 2 p.m. Saturday at First Family Church in Garland. Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Betty Ann Hamby, 72, of Watauga is 10:30 a.m. today at Hawkins Funeral Chapel in Bridgeport with burial at East Bridgeport Cemetery.

MEMORIAL service for Timothy Jessup, 57, of Boyd is 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Boyd. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the home of Jim and Sandy Lambert in Boyd. Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd is handling arrangements.
