CHICO HIRES AD – Paradise offensive coordinator Stephen Carter is the new athletic director and head football coach at Chico. Carter will start the new job Monday. Carter replaces Pete Hart, who reached a resignation agreement with the district in November.

PRESIDENT NAMED – Dr. Kevin Eaton was officially named president of Weatherford College at yesterday’s board of trustees meeting. He had been named the “sole finalist” at last month’s meeting. Eaton signed a three-year contract, through Dec. 31, 2012. “I am honored to be given the opportunity to serve as the president of this great institution,” said Eaton. “I promise to do everything I can to support all of our employees so that we can continue to move our college forward in this period of growth and change. I want our WC staff and the entire community to know that I value their opinions and that my door is always open.”

REGISTER TO VOTE – The last day to register to vote or make changes to your information for the March primary isĀ  Feb. 1. All new applications or changes must be brought to the Elections Office or postmarked by Feb. 1 for the information to be included in the voter list prepared for the March election.

CHILI BENEFIT – A benefit dinner for those displaced by the Dec. 19 fire in Runaway Bay is 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at The Club at Runaway Bay. Everyone who donates will receive a free chili and cornbread dinner.

SINGLES CLUB – The North Texas Singles Club meets at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hot Skillet in Alvord. For information, call (940) 627-7015 or (940) 627-6422 and leave a message.

SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley Center. The program is on the origins of geodes. Call Randall Watson at (940) 627-7837 for information.

SALE FOR SCHOLARSHIP – The Rhome Women’s club sale for its scholarship fund is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 145 First Street in Rhome. Clothing, furniture, exercise equipment, dishes and miscellaneous items will be available.

FREE COMPOST – Free compost is available through March at the Paradise Ag Barn located between the elementary and junior high schools. Bring your own equipment to load and haul.

MOVIE NIGHT – The Bridgeport Box Office presents the movie “G-Force” at 7 p.m. Saturday at Bridgeport Stage. Tickets are not required.

DEMOCRAT MEETING – The Wise County Democrats meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the Fairview Baptist Church Education Building, 969 Illinois St., in Rhome (intersection Farm Road 407 and Farm Road 2264). Guests are asked to bring a potluck dish.

MLK DAY CLOSINGS – The Decatur Housing Authority will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Day. All Wise County offices will also be closed Monday. Wise County Public Works and the Decatur FM 51 dumpsite will be closed Monday, and the Boyd, Chico and Cottondale dumpsites will close Wednesday, Jan. 20.

FUNERAL for Dean Ferguson, 96, of Paradise is 11 a.m. today at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Chapel with burial at Paradise Cemetery.

GRAVESIDE service for Johnnie Lou King, 70, of Newark is 11 a.m. Saturday at Aurora Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

GRAVESIDE service for Juanita Champion Tice, 92, formerly of Alvord is 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Alvord Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins.

SERVICE is pending for Chloe McCarroll, 95, of Decatur at Coker-Hawkins.

FUNERAL for Randy Hale, 45, of Springtown will be 2 p.m. today at Hopewell Baptist Church near Alvord with burial at Hopewell Cemetery. Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.
