Wise trio fails to lock down state bids

Boyd, Bridgeport and Decatur failed to lock down invitations to the state 7-on-7 tournament Saturday at Prosper.

Lovejoy won the state-qualifying tournament, knocking off Sanger in the final. Both teams earned spots in the Division II state tournament July 8-9 at Texas A&M University in College Station.

None of the local squads advanced out of pool play.

Decatur posted a 2-1 record, beating Class 2A state champion Pilot Point and Dallas Roosevelt. The Eagles fell by eight points to Sanger.

Boyd also went 2-1. The Yellowjackets knocked off Dallas A. Maceo Smith and Bridgeport before falling to Lovejoy.

Bridgeport finished 1-2, falling to Boyd and Lovejoy. The Bulls beat A. Maceo Smith.

Boyd and Decatur will take another stab at nailing down a state bid Saturday at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, starting at 9 a.m.

Bridgeport will wait until the qualifier June 12 at Glen Rose to try for a state spot.
