Stearns earns college try

Recent Boyd graduate Kyle Stearns will continue his baseball career at Frank Phillips College in Borger.

Stearns said he chose the school after it offered him a scholarship.

“It’ll be a good place to start [my career],” he said. “This is what I’ve been working for.”

Stearns was recruited to play the outfield at Frank Phillips. His coach at Boyd, Dwayne Gardner, said he will also have a chance at multiple spots.

“He’ll do well,” Gardner said. “He’s got good speed and can run on the basepaths. He’s got quick hands and can play shortstop and the outfield. He can also pitch. He’s got a good fastball.”

Stearns played shortstop and pitched for the Yellowjackets this past season. He batted .404 with 14 RBIs.

In 24 innings on the mound, he posted a 4.38 ERA, striking out 32 and walking 20.

He is looking forward to moving to the outfield full-time.

“I like the outfield,” Stearns said. “It’s where I play in the summer.”
