Friday night will usher in a new era for the Chico Dragons and coach Stephen Carter.
Carter will lead the Dragons onto the field for the first time against Perrin-Whitt at Pirate Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
“To be honest, I’m nervous,” Carter said. “I can’t wait.”
The Dragons will be looking for their first win in three seasons. Carter knows his team is hungry for success.
“This game is extremely important,” Carter said. “The kids need to see progress and get rewarded for their hard work.”
The Chico defense will be tested by the Pirates’ bruising runner, Bryce Cameron. The 6-0, 200-pound back ran for 1,809 yards and 15 touchdowns last year.
“He’s a big, strong kid,” Carter said. “Our gameplan is to try to contain him.”
In front of him, Perrin-Whitt has two big linemen – Chance Brown and Casey Brock.
“They are big up front,” Carter said. “They average 230. We’ll make some adjustments with our defensive line.”
Offensively, the Dragons want to establish Victor Velasquez, who had a strong scrimmage against Nocona last week. Chico is hoping its offensive line can control the line of scrimmage to give Velasquez and sophomore quarterback Hunter York a chance to make plays.
“We’re looking for consistency on the offensive line,” Carter said. “We need lots of reps. We’re only as good as our offensive line.”
