On his daily drive past the construction site of the Yellowjackets’ new football stadium, Boyd Athletic Director J.G. Cartwright’s eyes drift from the road.
“One day I’m going to hit someone head-on while I’m rubber-necking to see what’s going on,” the veteran coach said.
Cartwright is likely not the only Boyd resident with wandering eyes as they go past the busy construction site headed by construction manager at-risk, Pogue Construction.
The new stadium and its supporting facilities were approved by the Boyd School Board in November with a guaranteed maximum price of $6.7 million.
The stadium will feature an artificial playing surface, 3,000 seats and an eight-lane track. The district is also building a 12,000-square-foot fieldhouse at the north end of the stadium with a weight room, dressing rooms and offices for the coaching staff.
This past week, crews began building the visitor bleachers along the east side of the stadium, giving it some shape and fueling more excitement.
“It’s real exciting,” said Cartwright, who has been at Boyd since 1974. “The district stepped up to provide us something we can be proud of.”
No firm finish date has been established. Cartwright attended a construction meeting Thursday morning. He is hopeful that the majority of the facility will be ready by the start of school.
“Right now, the press box has got everything behind,” he said. “Everything will be ready but the press box.
“We’re hoping we’ll be in the fieldhouse by the start of school.”
Cartwright said there is a chance they could play their season opener Aug. 27 against Godley in the new stadium.
“We’re hoping it’s ready for the first game,” he said. “If not, it could be homecoming against Henrietta (Sept. 10) or our first district game (Pottsboro, Oct. 8).”
The Yellowjackets plan to work out on the field’s all-weather surface daily.
“This past year with all the rain, we had our varsity, junior varsity and junior high working out in this one little area that stayed dry,” Cartwright said.
Construction crews are busy working on the new fieldhouse, which is still without a roof. The new fieldhouse will replace one that was completed in 1983. It will feature three separate dressing areas.
“The fieldhouse is going to be nice,” Cartwright said. “It’s going to have three locker rooms. We’re busting at the seams. Over there, we’ll have a lot more room.”
The new fieldhouse also will house a weight room that will be a vast improvement over the Yellowjackets’ current facility.
“The weight room is such an important part of developing a program,” Cartwright said. “This weight room is bigger and will have air conditioning and heat. Right now, we have to open the big garage door. We’re hot in the summer and cold in the winter.”
Until construction is finished, Cartwright will try to keep his eyes on the road the best he can.
Along with the new stadium, Boyd’s basketball and volleyball teams will open a new gym this fall. Crews Thursday were applying a finish to the gym floor. The large gym with an auxiliary court is expected to be ready for the start of volleyball two-a-days in August.
