Water district to seek grants

By Phil Major | Published Sunday, June 6, 2010

Grants to repair two flood control dams will be sought by the Wise County Water Control and Improvement District, in conjunction with the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Conservationist Darnell Willis outlined wave damage to the two dams, one in the Big Sandy watershed and the other in the Salt Creek watershed. Estimated cost of the repairs is $281,520, and WCWCID would be responsible for 5 percent of that, with the rest coming from the state conservation service grant.

WCWCID directors also discussed continuing a cooperative agreement with NRCS, Tarrant Regional Water District, Wise County Soil and Water Conservation District and county commissioners.

The two water districts each would fund $25,000 for the project to help expedite construction of planned dams in the Big Sandy watershed.
