The Wise County Messenger announces the establishment of the Denny Deady Journalism Scholarship.

Each spring a graduating Wise County senior planning to major in journalism will be awarded $3,000 toward college tuition and expenses.

The scholarship honors the 33-year Messenger career of Deady, who worked in news and advertising. She recently retired.

Applicants will be judged by a panel of Messenger staff members.

Deady came to the Messenger from Central Texas and began as a staff reporter, also covering sports. She worked at the North County Messenger in Saginaw as general manager and returned to the Wise County Messenger news staff. She later moved to the ad department, where she served as manager. She completed her career as the special projects manager.

Her community involvement was widespread, and as a breast cancer survivor, many of her activities centered on women’s health issues.

She continues to serve on the board of the Wise Regional Health Foundation.

“Since Denny’s life has been so much about giving, we could think of no better way to honor her than to assist some young person pursuing a similar career path,” said Messenger publisher Phil Major.
