Remembering a Wise pioneer

July 9, 2010, marks the 100th anniversary of the death of an early Wise County settler.

George Washington King died at age 56 and is buried in the Flat Rock Cemetery. King was the great-great-grandfather of Steven King of Rhome, son of Cliff King of Duncan, Okla.

Other descendants of King include George Warren King of Decatur.

George Washington King and his wife, Martha Elizabeth Mathews King, traveled by covered wagon from Benton County, Ark., to Wise County in the mid-1880s. They settled north of Decatur and had seven children.
