Groups in Paradise and Chico are rallying to bring alcohol sales into their cities.

The Citizens for Improvement has begun collecting signatures on a petition for the sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed beverages, in the city of Chico.

Ellen Taylor of Paradise is leading the charge to collect signatures on a petition to sell all alcoholic beverages within the city limits of Paradise. Taylor has not applied for a petition yet but has the 10 signatures she needed on the application.

The Citizens for Improvement will need 75 valid signatures from registered voters in Chico on the petition. Paradise needs 41.

“Everyone around us sells it – beer and wine – and the money goes toward helping their town,” said JoAnn Bible with the Citizens for Improvement. “Chico really needs the help.”

Bible and other citizens had several discussions about the issue before pulling an application several weeks ago. The organization filed a public notice June 24 and have since started collecting signatures on the petition.

“We’ve had a really good response. I’ve only had two people tell me no,” Bible said.

Taylor plans to go door to door to collect the signatures.

“There’s been so many that have wanted to sign and they weren’t registered voters,” she said. “They’re going to get registered (so they can sign the petition).”

The petitions must be turned in by July 23 and must be in the Wise County Elections office for 30 days before the county commissioners can call an election. If the signatures are verified, the county commissioners will vote to order an election at the Aug. 23 meeting. The last day to place an item on the November ballot is Aug. 24.
