Academy to open in fall

Victory in Christ Classical Lutheran Academy in Newark will open Sept. 13 to children in pre-k through ninth grades. The academy plans to add a grade each year through 12th grade. For information, call (817) 489-5400.

Employment data released for county

According to a report from the Texas Workforce Commission, Wise County’s employment for the fourth quarter of 2009 amounted to 17,585 people.

The largest number of workers, 4,339, were employed in the trade, transportation and utilities industries. Other industry totals include local government, 3,410; education and health services, 2,166; natural resources and mining, 1,917; leisure and hospitality, 1,453; manufacturing, 1,318; construction, 915; professional business services, 821; financial activities, 503; other services, 394; information, 116; federal and state government, 113 each; and unclassified, 6.

Covered employment and wages for all industries, including the federal government, in the fourth quarter amounted to wages of $176,306,503 for an average weekly wage of $771.

ENERGY STAR items to be sales tax free

On Memorial Day weekend, Texans have the opportunity to save on energy-efficient appliances.

The third annual ENERGY STAR sales tax holiday May 29-31 means Texans do not have to pay state and local sales tax on certain energy-efficient products.

Qualifying household products bearing the ENERGY STAR label include air conditioners priced less than $6,000, refrigerators priced less than $2,000, ceiling fans, incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, clothes washers, dishwashers, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats, along with installation and delivery charges for these products.

Dr. Jerry Watson named chief

Dr. Jerry Watson was named chief of staff of Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He is the son of Jerry and Shirley Watson and the grandson of Mrs. Joe Lee Fox, all of Decatur.

Jerry is a cardiologist, and he joined the hospital in 1995. He and his wife, Jennifer, have triplets, Ethan, Nathan and Lindsey.
