Wise County Messenger photographers Joe and Julie Duty had the opportunity to share tricks of the trade with local youngsters at a recent camp put on by the Learning Ladder in Decatur.

Joe said the greatest thing about photos is sharing, be it images or knowledge about images.

“The object of the class was not to work on the technical aspect of the camera, but to focus more on their own individual vision and how to capture that with the camera, because ‘the heart and mind are the true lens of the camera'” Joe said, referencing one of his favorite quotes.

A dozen students soaked up knowledge about photography over three days, and each student was given a final assignment to select five photos that promoted their personal vision and then share it with others in the class.

Joe said he was amazed with the improvement the students showed at the end of the week. The photo above was taken by fourth-grader Abby Grimes of Decatur.
