Attention Wise County 4-H members: the deadline is fast approaching to sign up for 4-H to be eligible to participate in the Wise County Youth Fair. You must sign up by Dec. 31 at midnight to be eligible to show in 2011 WCYF.
If you were in 4-H last year and have stopped getting the newsletter for the past two months, that means that you are no longer in our system. You must sign up online at https://texas.4honline.com to join 4-H.
If you do not have Internet access or need help signing up, come by the Extension office in Decatur. We would be happy to help!
On Dec. 29, there was to be a Show Cattle Clinic at the Stowers Limousin Cattle Company from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have entered a steer or heifer at any major stock show, or are a first-time steer or heifer showman, I highly encourage you to show up to this clinic so that you can have some knowledge as to what is going on when you get to the show.
Bring your steer or heifer that you will be showing during the 2011 stock show season. If you would like to work with your calf during the hands-on clipping demonstration, do not bring a calf that will be going to Fort Worth.
I will try to have scales there so that you can see what your steers are weighing. We will go over daily care, nutrition, how to wash them properly and how to get them ready for the show as well as showmanship. Call the office at (940) 627-3341 and sign up for the class.
On Jan. 4, there will be a Show Pig Clinic at 6:30 p.m. at the Decatur Visitor Center (106 S. Trinity in Decatur). Steve Bradshaw, an agriculture science teacher at Paradise High School, will cover topics such as nutrition, health, daily care and preparing for the show. It is not too late to purchase a pig for the WCYF, and we will have a list of reputable breeders that still have pigs. Call the office to sign up.
Jan. 8 from 8 to 11 a.m. is the Youth Fair tag-in for sheep, goats, hogs, non-registered heifers and dairy-sale heifers. If you miss this tag-in date you will not be eligible to show in the WCYF. Just because you tag your animal does not mean you are entered in the WCYF. Entries open on Jan. 10 and will close on Feb. 12. For more information go to http://www.wcyouthfair.org.
On Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m., there will be a Broiler Clinic at the Extension office. Topics that will be covered include housing, nutrition, health, daily care and selection. If you have been showing broilers for years or if this is your first time, this workshop is for you. Contact the Extension office to sign up.
All of the workshops listed above are open to all 4-H and FFA members or youth who are interested in raising the above projects next year. Contact the office if you have any questions or would like to sign up for a clinic. We look forward to seeing you there!
